French Writers & Rumorous Wildfires

Hey-o,

On a plane taxied on the runway. Sitting across from a few sad/irritated babies that are ready to hop out of this crap shoot. I used to be terrified of flying and clutch the seat throughout the whole flight. But now I just do it because I have to. Got to leave crying for my baby and hop on a jet plane to play some shows.

Isn't it exciting when we land, though? I'm always in the mood to shout, "we did it!" and hug the pilot.
But I just say that to myself instead and walk on with a nod to the flight attendant.

Almost finished this collection of French short stories. Writers like de Balzac, Baudelaire and de Maupassant. Brilliant keys into humanity and also beautiful story telling. It feels good to read doesn't it?  I'm not a very consistent reader and do spend most of my reading time on "Morris Goes to School" and "Miss Nelson is Missing" but I really feel good about myself and the world (that's really what it comes down to I suppose) when I put down tetris and read a story in a real paper book.

I just wanted to say that I'm not sure how  Jay-z putting a Polica video on his blog became "Polica is Jayz's favorite Indie-rock band" but whatever...just wanted to note that those rumors crack me up and I'm sure they crack you up too.

Love you,
Channy

There's Bowling on the Sched

Hey guys!!!!

I'm suddenly in a indescribably great mood. Has something to do with being on the homestretch & able to almost say "we did it guys and now we can drive home stuffing Swedish fish and pumpkin vanilla chai chocolate cappucinos down our bellies knowing it won't be detrimental to our performace skills or picture smiles"!! Yay to us but mostly to you the listener and also our " team" for being there and paving our tour with golden nuggets of encouragement and opportunities. It also has a lot to.do with my insane mood swings but that's nothing new.

I've just discoverd Nico Muhly and Suzanne Ciani.. Isn't that embarrassing and also exciting for me. The most common interview question I get "what are your influences/what music do you like" and I never know. I'm not afraid to say the wrong, uncool thing; I just don't know. There are too many random things going in my ear. So I was thinking this year I would just listen to three artists (intentionally) and not only would I have an answer to the FAQs but I'd be able to experiment on myself and the music I collaborate with. Sounds fun to me! I of course will still listen to bonethugs & ect in the tour van but that won't be a problem.
I'm thinking Nico Muhly, KS Chithra & probably Suzanne Ciani including more recent new-age relaxation releases, but if anybody's got some suggestions I'd be into it.

We're on our way to a photo shoot (posing is an odd thing) and then loading into Brooklyn Bowl to play with Zulu Winter tonight. Zulu Winter is a top notch band of London guys with beautiful songs. It is the bands first time in America as a band and as people. They had their first stack of pancakes. I'm excited to have that experience when I go to London for the first time this summer. Thanks London.

Love you all & see you tonight Brooklyn,
Channy

the road to Rhodey

First off, shout to my little brother and the tragic news about hair and stuff and also to Seeda who I wish could magically turn 21 when I come Boston (& then go back to being 14 immediately ofcourse).

Also I really applaud Beyonce for having a twitter account but never tweeting anything; what discipline!

In Rhode Island tonight: never been. I've started doing that cliche thing where I get to a city and go to sleep immediately upon arrival and get up shortly before sound check. That's mostly cuz I love naps. This has been a learning tour and long tour for me; I think the rest of the band feels the same.  It is a strange job but it is a job and I'm blessed to have one. I'm thinking about adding tap dancing to the live show or wearing increasingly un-ironically ugly clothing to see how fast I am shunned by the blogosphere.
But what a wonderful string of shows we've had with fantastic crowds. I appreciate you all very much and am encouraged by you in giant ways! Thank you so much everybody for coming out with your support and saying hello.

I haven't read a book since I left SXSW for some reason but I am catching up on some Vice articles and playing math games.  My notebook is almost filled with lyrics but that's only because I've ripped out half of its pages to write set lists each night...but don't you worry (speaking to Ryan here) I am writing songs.

April 1st we will finish this tour at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York. I really love that city and can't wait to take my daughter there someday when we are touring our mother daughter act called "Somei the Monster" (that's copyrighted).

I leave you with this quote: "Delusions, hallucinations, and psychosis made me fearful, not violent.  The things I was afraid of were so scary and unmanageable that I couldn't coordinate a plan to take them on.  Leaving the house was hard enough, but taking on Batman seems insurmountable." -Erik Leavitt (vice magazine, Jan 2012)

Okay y'all ...keep it magical,

Channy

Southy

Found a moment to sit...I'm meeting someone and I'm early.

Polica's in Austin for SXSW till Saturday, in which time will leave for a two week tour through the south and east coast. Going to play in Nashville!

I'm learning and deciding about the sort of band I want POLIÇA to be. I'm talking about character more than anything else, Ryan will keep the music from getting too stupid, but how we interact with our environment should be top policy.

Drew and CHRIS saved a turtle; great job guys; let's keep that nature rescue thing going.

Also let's continue to have a skimpy/non-exsistence rider...we need to stay hungry and un-tended otherwise we get on stage all full and comfy; singing with no inspiration or drive but the desire to get to the green room and eat a jumbo bag of starbursts after we play. No!! I won't do it.

Also, thanks to everybody that has been coming out to our shows this week. I'm happy to see you all and hope we're giving you a good time of it.

Amongster Video

I wanted to tell you all why I am into the images in the new POLIÇA video for "Amongster".
As a songwriter I'm excited about inviting videograhers to  interpret the music & lyrics.  It's inspiring to get a new perspective on songs I thought I knew the meaning of.
When the "Amongster" video was presented to us, I fell in love with the images; not so much as a literal representation of "Amongster" but as a visual statement of my vision for  POLIÇA's music and myself as a person/artist.
Like millions of people all over the world, I've had my fill of fucked up sex experiences. Those memories are confounded by all the horrible excuses for sex & sexiness I see in music videos and hear about in music lyrics. I want to be able to make music & have music videos to oppose the stupid shit that leads people to act like sex is still about stealing a bounty or serving a man's needs.
So...I admire the way Saku (the videographer/director for the Amongster video) is presenting sex between two willing people in a safe and beautiful place... amongst the trees and naked as we came.
The man isn't dominating and the woman's on top but she's not dominating him either; they're combining into one for a common goal of feeling good. The sex isn't violent but neither is it boring (atleast to me). It's animal sex; it doesn't need porn or drugs to climax; the people have sex just because they both want to and because they need to. And the bugs and animals are doing their thing too and seem to agree that sex is good.
That's it,
Channy

Archie

St. Louis here we are.  I rolled out of bed pretty wicked looking at 10 am to talk to my daughter quick before collapsing in the van to sleep a bit more. I sleep a lot on this tour---but also have been killing it on the driving end if I don't say so myself.  I didn't even bring an ipod/musical listening device on this run cuz I want to take a break from songwriting to read a book and let my brain relax a bit.  And then when I get to the venue the real day begins and ends at 3:30 am.

Marijuana Deathsquads and Total Fucking Blood are finishing this last leg of tour with us.  It's me and 9 guys---but I don't really notice (until I do) cuz we're all having a rad time and I'm getting to sit in with Deathsquads a bit.
This tour is hard work but my band is a bunch of funny buddies so the days are filled with lots of crack ups and jump roping.... Drew's working on his stand-up/slap-stick comedy, Bierdens writing amazing disco songs, Bens' got a new sweatshirt and Nate is killing it at van packing and leading the pack to the light.
Last tour was my bloody mary tour--this tour I'm drinking whatever's clever.

This is a first little short note of many to come---happy times all and thanks for reading!
love, channy
